• Pisa had a “Universitas” from the mid-12th century, characterized by a group of students gathering around masters.
• Leonardo Fibonacci, a renowned mathematician, was born and worked in Pisa during this period, synthesizing Greek geometry and Arabic mathematics.
• Papal seal “In Supremae dignitatis” issued in 1343 granted Studium in Pisa the title of Studium Generale with exclusive privileges.
• Studium Generale was a higher institute of education confirmed by universal authority, such as the papacy or empire.
• Pisa was one of the first European cities with papal attestation, followed by Prague and Heidelberg.
  Initial years of the new Studium were challenging, with slow recovery starting in 1355.
• End of the 14th century and beginning of the 15th century marked a decline for Pisa and its Studium due to war and economic damage inflicted by Florentine conquest.
